Grey Matters: intelligent conservation

We are currently opposing an application for a quarry development by MAQ Aggregates to dig 60 feet below the water table for the next 46 years on approximately 250 acres of land which includes Provincially Significant Wetlands, is the headwaters of 3 locally significant rivers, is only 1300 metres from a Provincial Nature Reserve, and is home to 7 Species at Risk (of which 3 are threatened, 1 is endangered, and 3 are Species of Concern).  We believe that this proposed quarry would permanently damage the local ecosystem and could have a serious impact on the water supply for the local community who, being rural, rely solely on wells.

The proposed quarry is literally 20 metres from another proposed quarry of 190 acres, and is next to 2 other existing quarries (see map).  This rural agricultural area is in danger of becoming a mega-quarry subdivision.
